Have you ever wondered about the oldest Stupa in Sri Lanka?
Thuparamaya was built during the reign of King Devamnampiyatissa, the first Stupa which was erected at 250BC-210BC in Mahinda hour which was an envoy sent by the Indian King Ashoka to Sri Lanka. Mahinda and Sangamitha, son and daughter of King Ashoka, brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Mahinda brought the greatness of the Buddha's collar to be devised in Stupa, which is still here. Notably, it was not only Stupa but also the Aramaic complex. However, the Aramean complex that covers about 3 acres around Stupa is in ruins now. Stupa-house is one of Stupa's most renowned sites, known as Vedagate. The remains of the wookwork are beautifully done.
History of gold and bricks
The outer Vedatgate was made of gold and silver until the Pandyans were plundered by the seventh century. Two and a half centuries later, when Mahinda IV got back on the Vedagate covered with gold and silver somewhere around 956-972 AD, again it was looted by cola.
Then after a long period of 900 years, in 1862, it was renovated again in modern times, which transformed the ancient monuments of Stupa.
